Somatic Symptoms & Related Disorders

When Body Speaks, Listen

Sometimes emotional struggles show up in physical ways — pain, fatigue, or other symptoms that don’t have a clear medical explanation or seem more intense than expected. Somatic symptom and related disorders remind us that the mind and body are deeply connected. These symptoms are real and can be distressing, even when medical tests don’t reveal a cause. At Cortes Counseling, we offer understanding, validation, and support to help you manage symptoms, ease emotional strain, and feel more in control of your life.

What are Somatic Symptom & Related Disorders?

Somatic symptom and related disorders are conditions where a person experiences significant physical symptoms, such as pain, weakness, or shortness of breath, that are linked to emotional distress. These conditions can include somatic symptom disorder, illness anxiety disorder, and conversion disorder. The symptoms are not “imagined” or “made up”; they are real experiences that can affect daily life and well-being.

The connection between mind and body means that stress, anxiety, trauma, or other psychological factors can intensify physical sensations. While medical care is important to rule out other conditions, counseling can address the emotional and cognitive patterns that contribute to or worsen symptoms, helping you find relief and a better quality of life.

When Should I Consider Counseling for Somatic Symptom Disorders?

You might consider counseling if physical symptoms are interfering with your daily activities, causing ongoing anxiety, or leading to frequent medical visits without clear answers. It can also help if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by worries about your health or if symptoms persist despite medical reassurance.

Counseling is not a replacement for medical care; instead, it works alongside it. By addressing the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral factors linked to your symptoms, therapy can help reduce distress, improve coping, and give you tools to live more fully, even when symptoms persist.

What Happens During Counseling for Somatic Symtom Disorders?

In counseling, we start by understanding your physical experiences, your health concerns, and the ways these affect your emotions and daily life. Together, we explore the connection between your mind and body, identifying stressors, thought patterns, and emotional triggers that may be influencing your symptoms.

Therapy may involve learning relaxation techniques, mindfulness skills, and cognitive strategies to shift unhelpful thinking patterns. We also work on building resilience and coping skills so you can manage symptoms with greater ease. Over time, many people notice not only reduced distress but also improved overall well-being and a restored sense of control over their lives.
