Bereavement/Grief

Honoring Loss & Finding Hope
Grief is one of the most difficult parts of being human. When we lose someone or something deeply meaningful, it can feel like the world has shifted beneath us. Sadness, anger, confusion, and even numbness are all natural responses to loss, but they can sometimes feel overwhelming. At Cortes Counseling, we provide a safe, compassionate place where you can process your grief at your own pace, honor your loss, and begin moving toward healing and hope.
What is Bereavement/Grief?
Bereavement refers to the experience of loss, most often through the death of a loved one, while grief describes the emotions and reactions that follow. Grief isn’t “one size fits all” — it can appear as sadness, guilt, anger, relief, or even moments of peace, often shifting day by day. Some people notice changes in sleep, appetite, or energy, while others struggle with feelings of emptiness or disconnection.
Grief is not a problem to “fix” but a process to walk through. While time alone can help, counseling can provide guidance, tools, and support to ease the weight and help you feel less alone in your journey.
When Should I Consider Counseling for Bereavement/Grief?
You might consider counseling if your grief feels too heavy to carry on your own, if it lingers in a way that makes daily life feel impossible, or if you feel stuck in guilt, anger, or hopelessness. It can also help if you find yourself avoiding reminders of your loss, struggling to connect with loved ones, or feeling like no one understands what you’re going through.
Seeking counseling doesn’t mean you’re “not strong enough.” It means you’re choosing to give yourself space, care, and guidance in navigating one of life’s hardest experiences.
What Happens During Counseling for Bereavement/Grief?
In grief counseling, you’ll have a safe, understanding place to share your story and feelings without judgment. Together, we explore your unique experience of loss, honor the meaning of your relationship, and begin to gently create space for healing. This may include learning coping strategies, finding ways to manage overwhelming emotions, and discovering how to carry your loved one’s memory forward in healthy, meaningful ways.
Counseling doesn’t erase grief — but it helps you move through it with greater support, resilience, and hope. Over time, many find they’re able to reconnect with life, embrace moments of joy again, and carry their loss with love rather than only pain.
