Counseling & Educational Resource Planning

For individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their friends, family members, and educators, there are a number of unique challenges that need to be addressed in order to develop safe environments where those with ASD can thrive. The Cortes Counseling Services team in Bethany works regularly with individuals with ASD and their families to provide therapy and counseling services in our office and/or virtually.

What is ASD?

Autism and ASD are general names given to a group of disorders that occur during brain development. They used to be referred to variously by a number of different names, including autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, and Asperger syndrome, among others. These developmental disorders impact the nervous system. They can lead to difficulties interacting and communicating with others as well as struggles with obsessive interests and repetitive behaviors.

Why Would I Work with an ASD Counselor?

The first reason individuals with ASD would seek therapy is for an accurate assessment and diagnosis. Once you, your child, or a loved one are diagnosed with ASD, you may want to continue with therapy to help with some of the behavioral aspects of ASD. You may also need to work with educational therapy and assessment specialists to ensure kids receive adequate and appropriate resources to develop their academic strengths and flourish within educational systems. Family therapy can also be beneficial to help the other members of a family system to assist the individual with ASD, but it’s also beneficial to ensure everyone receives the care, attention, and space they need to lead meaningful and satisfying lives.

What Happens During Counseling for Autism?

In counseling, we start by understanding the individual’s strengths, needs, and goals. Sessions may focus on improving social communication, managing sensory sensitivities, practicing coping strategies, and addressing emotions like anxiety or frustration. Family counseling can help improve communication, reduce conflicts, and create a more supportive home environment.

The process is collaborative and tailored to each person, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Over time, therapy can increase confidence, improve daily functioning, and help individuals on the spectrum feel more understood and connected.
